Renew Old Covenant?

Q:  I have seen some groups refer to the Covenant as the Renew Old Covenant/New Covenant.  Isn’t the New Covenant just a rehash of the Old, is that what they mean?

A: This is something those in the Hebrew Root Movement (HRM) usually do.  Their focus is on the Old Covenant.  It is easy to prove the error by going to the teachings of the Apostles.  First, let’s understand our Savior YaHshua in a prayer to our Heavenly Father makes a special request –

(John 17:20)  Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

We have their word and we have our Savior’s Word, and we have the Word of our Heavenly Father, but notice, YaHshua, our Savior praying for us, those of us that believe in Him, those of us who believe in YaHshua by their Word.  This was His prayer request and what He did not say -- no mention of the Covenant made with Israel.  Yes, the Apostles did quote from the Old Covenant, as did our Savior, but in the end it is by their word and how they used the words of the Old Covenanat that counts, not the Old Covenant words then their's?

Knowing this we then need to see if the Old Covenant is really supposed to be restored or “renewed” as some are teaching.  Why don’t we let the “words” of the Apostles of the Christ speak to us?

(Jer 31:31)  Behold, the days come, says the YaHweH, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

New, not “renewed” and not “restored” but NEW.  Letting the word speak for itself, words of truth, words from our Creator bound up in a book for us, as our sword of protection against those who would misuse, misapply and twist it into a different shape – we need to study and grasp the meaning of “rightly dividing the truth” – it is all truth and dividing it properly we need the understanding of what our Savior taught and what the Apostles taught concerning these words of truth.  We cannot afford to put our salvation in the hands of just anyone, we are responsible for our own Salvation and how we get there, through Him and Him alone (Php 2:12).

(Rom 10:4)  For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

(Rom 10:9)  That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord YaHshua, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.

(2Co 3:6)  He has made us (the Apostles) competent as ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

(Heb 9:17)  because a will (covenant) is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living.

While YaHshua was alive the Covenant made with Israel by Moses was in effect by the blood of bulls and sheep that had to be continually shed to keep it in force.  When our Savior became the ultimate and final sacrifice, dying, He brought in the New Covenant, placing the Old Covenant to the side.  He died for us and by His blood the New Covenant was instituted.

(Mat 26:28)  For this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. (YaHshua held up the wine as a symbol of His blood, better than the blood of animal)

You will notice, NEW Testament, New Covenant, not restore and not renew but NEW.

(Heb 10:16-17)  This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

A “covenant” He is going to make, not “renew”.  And this covenant, from the context, is much different than the first, or Old Covenant, because the Old could not remove sin, but notice we are told something different is happening with this New Covenant to be made with Israel.  We already enjoy the New Covenant; they too will entering into this kind of New Covenant.

(Heb 10:18)  Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

(Heb 10:19)  Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of YaHshua,  by a new and living way, which he has consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, His flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God;

This is the New Covenant, a New Living Way.

(Heb 12:23)  To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to YaHshua the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better things than that of Abel (of the flesh, of writings in stone).

It is not mistake these detailed instructions are addressed to the Hebrews, Jewish brethren and apply to us to as the “Church of the Firstborn”.
