Answer & Response:
Malachi's message was delivered specifically to the people of Israel.  I see and hear the message clearly.  This prophetic message it aimed directly at the Jewish people.  Read the first chapter of Luke and you will see that John the Baptist is this, or was this, Elijah to come.  Some listened to him but most did not and the warning was carried out.

Our Lord identified John the Baptist as that Elijah (Mt 11:12-15 - see verses below).  Notice the warning, a warning, the threat that would not be necessary if the people turned to listen to the Elijah enmasse.  We are also told that John the Baptist was working in the same spirit as the Elijah (Lk 1:17- see verses below).  So, what happened?  The people, for the most part, did not listen to him and did not know who he was anymore than they recognized the Messiah.  And look what happened?  The people did not listen and in 68-70AD a great and terrible day did fall on them, 3.5 years of assault by the punishing Roman Legions ending in the destruction of the Temple and the enslavement of the remnant, after over a million people were killed -- this is not the first time the God of Israel used Gentile powers to punish the people of Israel, and the Jews.

Then 70 years later, 138-140 AD another assault on Jerusalem, this time the whole city was leveled.  Everyone thinks that every time the term, "Day of the Lord" is used it means the end days, but what it really means is when HE the Creator acts, when HE takes action -- that day becomes His day.  We are going to see the Wrath to come, not only the Wrath of God but the Wrath of the Lamb as well, and those will be "days" of fear and terror.  Rev 6:12-17 & Isa 13:7-10.  If you take the time to read these verse in your own Bible these prophetic times have not happened yet and you will see not mention of the Elijah.  Later, much later, we read fo the Two Witnesses (Rev 11) and they appear to be poor in physical means, being dressed in "sack cloth" as opposed to fine linen and robes of gold, but they have the Power of the Living God and the authority of YaHshua, as all power and authority has been given to Him by our Heavenly Father.

Read Malachi's prophetic statement again, it is not addressed to the world, it is addressed specifically to the people of Israel.  This is a prophetic error many make applying words meant for others to themselves.  It does not mean the warning should not be considered or as a warning to govern our own actions or to be received as a warning of our Creator's attitude about things but this prophetic message is directed at the people of Israel and we do see its fulfillment in history, but to point to this as a future event?  Others pointing to this prophetic message and applying it  their leader or prophet claim they are Elijah in the prophecy.  Let's consider something else, let's consider the Elijah, Malachi was talking about has already come, as we consider the following --

(Luke 1:17)  And he (John) will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
   And our Lord says:
(Mat 11:12-15)  From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.  For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.  And if you are willing to accept it, he (John) is the Elijah who was to come.  He who has ears, let him hear.

So, what do you hear?  Can you accept it?  Is someone you know claiming to be the Elijah?  Are you still looking for this individual?  Or maybe the groups or work you follow is claiming to be the "work of Elijah"?  My Bible speaks of someone else we should be looking for, the Two Witnesses.  But wait, they will only come after the events of Rev 6:12-17 and then after the that, the 7th Seal.  When the whole earth shakes and those who survive then go through the events of the 7th Seal, only after these events do the Two Witnesses come on the scene.

When these prophetic words find their fulfillment the petty arguments about moons, and times, and Sabbaths will fall by the way as people scramble to survive.  Imagine a worldwide Tsunami raging around the world ravaging the coast lands when this Worldwide shaking takes place -- in some places the waves breaking on shore will be up to a 1,000 feet high.  Some try to down play this 6th Seal by saying it is all talking about politics and governments being shaken, but when you look at the context, when you look at people's response, both great and small a different picture forms -- this is not some symbolic occurance but a real happening, it is going to be a real event and people will think the end has come -- but still, not yet, this will only be the beginning of what is to come.

Will our Savior find faith when He returns?  Will we see or witness this, or one of our generations in the future?  It is coming, it is going to happen and His words and warning will prove true.  Had all of Israel accepted John as the Elijah they would have recognized YaHshua as Savior, and son of God and things would have been different, the turning of the hearts of the people from stone to flesh and the great repentance and even the full on Resurrection and Restoration would have taken place.  But this did not happen.  Look at the plus to this -- if it had happened then and Israel would have awoken and had repented we, you and me, would not be here.  This, we are told, is the mercy of our God, He allowes Salavtion to be delayed, but not as we see delay, because He wants to bring as many as possible into the Kingdom -- HalleluYaH and thank you Father (2 Pt 3:9).

(Luke 18:8)  I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

(Luke 18:9)  To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, YaHshua told this parable:

The Workers of the Law should read this parable -- actually it applies to all of us but the context and the lead into it was aimed at those seeing themsleves over others, more law abiding, we could say.  It is repentance leading to those that will worship our Heavenly Father -- well, again, let's let our Savior, YaHshua tell us --

(John 4:23) Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

It is realized that the people of Israel and of Samaria were worshiping the God of Israel by the LAW, by Torah, so we know our Savior YaHshua was not talking about Torah.  Our worship in the Spirit finds it completeness in YaHshua Himself and our righteousness is in HIM not us.  The Children of the God in Heaven will do what is right, will be led to do what is right in every situation and when one fails in this, still being in the flesh, we repent and continue in His Spirit.  The Law of God is just and good and is over the heads of all humanity but not the Children of the Kingdom or the King.  We are not talking about the Law of Moses, though many of the precepts are found in the Old Covenant, we are not under the Old Covenant.  Still others want us to become bound to the Law of Moses, to rule our lives so that we serve the Law of Moses as opposed to the Law of the Christ.  What is the Law of Christ?  It is the Work of the Father, that we believe on Him whom He sent, accepting Him as our Savior.

Look for Elijah?  Serve your ElijaH?  I look for the coming of YaHshua and serve Him.  Peace, Dan
